Sweet and Dry

Sally likes sweet. Nik likes dry. Peter Sorbitz points to recommendations on a handout listing Simon Creek’s various wine selections. The Untouchable Red, their most popular wine, is a medium dry ruby cabernet – an in-between.

“You can have it with things that call for white wine,” says Peter, who doles out generous drops of wine and leads wine tours for the vineyard and winery nestled near Jacksonport.

“Looks like Italy,” says Sally as they pull up the gravel driveway hugged by rows of grape vines, “and Wisconsin,” she adds as a cornfields spreads before them.

Incorporating a local flavor, the winery features Door County Cherry wine, their third most popular wine, which is made from tart Door County cherries. “We use cherries from local vendors,” says Peter. “There are enough cherries in Door County – we don’t have to start a growing venture.”

A sip of the cherry wine ends with a flash of the tart cherry flavor.

The most popular white, the American Gewurztraminer, derives its title from the German word ‘spicy’ and the village Tramin in Italy, where German settlers produced their own wine.

“The spice comes from the grape,” says Peter, “it’s nothing we add.”

As the coolness of fall spreads over the county and the grapes hang from vines in plump little bunches, visiting a Door County winery is a wonderful way to appreciate the season.
