Take Part in Pen Park’s First Day Hike

On Jan. 1, Peninsula State Park will sponsor a First Day Hike, offering visitors the opportunity to start the year off with a family friendly trek led by Friends of Peninsula State Park and Volunteer Master Naturalist Jan Mills. Chris Holicek, president of the Friends, says, “Think of it as the start of a new and healthy lifestyle, for the whole family.”

First Day hikers will meet at the Weborg picnic shelter, at 10 am on Jan. 1. They will walk an easy one to three mile route along the Sunset Trail and Weborg Marsh. The event will conclude around noon, after hikers have warmed up in the shelter with hot chocolate and cookies.

Children are welcome, with adult supervision, but pets are not allowed. Participants are advised to bring a water bottle, binoculars, field guides, and to dress for the weather, with hiking boots or snowshoes. A state park vehicle sticker is required. This is a great time to purchase a 2016 Wisconsin State Park Sticker for the upcoming season.

“We are excited to host a First Day Hike as part of the national effort to showcase Wisconsin State Parks as critical places for connecting people to nature, promoting year-round recreation and fostering healthy outdoor lifestyles,” says Kelli Bruns, Peninsula State Park Superintendent.
