TAP Marquee Being Restored

The iconic marquee that lights up 3rd Avenue in downtown Sturgeon Bay is receiving a major face-lift. Repairs began Oct. 8 as part of a larger Third Avenue Playhouse (TAP) project to renovate the entire building at 239 N. 3rd Ave. and reopen an updated theater facility by spring 2021. (Learn more about the renovation at ReImagineTAP.org.)

Poblocki Sign Company of Milwaukee will lead the marquee restoration, which will require removing some pieces for repair off-site. The electrical components will be updated, and the light bulbs will be replaced with energy-efficient LED lights. The project is set to be completed by the end of the calendar year.

TAP acquired the 1908 building – often remembered as The Donna movie theater from 1950 until the 1990s – in 2000. Last summer, TAP kicked off a $3.5 million capital campaign to raise funds to renovate the building. When completed, the theater will still provide intimate theatrical experiences, but with updated facilities for both audiences and artists.
