• Close to 500 members of the community and area visitors attended this year’s Taste of the Garden Door. A variety of fruits and vegetables were donated, prepared, grilled and/or sautéed in The Garden Door by volunteers from UW Peninsular Agricultural Research Station, Wood Orchard, Steep Creek Farms, UW Extension, DCMGA, and Curt Campbell from the Oilerie.

The Pesto Festo tent used over 1,300 crackers to sample 19 different pestos submitted by various chefs that were vying for the first ever People’s Choice Pesto Bowl award which was donated by Curt Campbell of The Oilerie and engraved by Sally Everhardus. Laura Kennedy won the award for her Great Green Pesto (Entry #2). Earlier, the panel of Judges (Jan Coulson, co-owner of White Gull Inn; Susan Guthrie, co-owner/chef of Bluefront Café, and Adrian Murre, cooking instructor at NWTC) had sampled each pesto and chose Lori Holtz’s Minty Pea Pesto (Entry #17) for 1st place. Dean Volenberg placed 2nd with his Door County Sun Dried Tomato and Sun Dried Pear Pesto (Entry #8), Earlene Lutzke placed 3rd with her Zippy Garlic Scape Pesto (Entry #13) and Doug Laundrie won Most Creative for his Fire-N-Ice Pesto (Entry #20).

Walking off the feast of samples, visitors were amused and educated on herbal preparations by Jane Knaapen Cole, the art of dyeing yarn and material using plant materials by the Dyeing Divas Sally Everhardus and Martha Burris, and dried petal arrangements by Mary Gehm.

Recipes for the various marinades, dips and winning pestos will be available by visiting http://www.dcmga.org near the end of September.

• Annual Halloween events at the Door County YMCA will begin with a costume exchange at the Sturgeon Bay Program Center on October 1.

The Halloween Costume Exchange is a family centered event inviting everyone to bring their child’s gently-worn costume and exchange it for a different costume. The exchange enables families to reuse and recycle costumes that are usually only worn once, as well as save money without having to purchase new costumes.

The event will begin at 1 pm. Each family will receive one ticket per costume (up to 4) to be exchanged for a new costume. After handing in the costumes at 1 pm, attendees are invited to enjoy an inflatable bouncer while they wait for the exchange to begin at 2 pm. Those without a costume to exchange can purchase one for $10.

Participants do not need to be a Y member. All costumes left over and funds raised will be donated to the Door County YMCA Childcare and Clothe My People. Additional donations will also be accepted at the costume exchange.

• Ministry Door County Medical Center (MDCMC) is hoping to diminish the impact of influenza with flu vaccination clinics at their North Shore Medical Clinic locations in Sturgeon Bay, Fish Creek and Algoma during September and October.

Influenza, also known as the flu, is a contagious respiratory illness caused by the influenza virus. Most people experience a mild to moderate illness, but it can become serious and even lead to death.

The best way to prevent the flu is to get vaccinated every year. There are the two types of flu vaccines available at North Shore Medical Clinic locations: flu shots and the nasal–spray flu vaccine. The cost for each vaccination is $26 cash. Medicare/Medicaid are billed directly and private insurers have the option to pay cash or it can be submitted to insurance.
