Technical Difficulties Delay Review of Camp Zion Proposal

The next steps for a proposed conference and retreat center at Camp Zion in Ellison Bay will have to wait. The Door County Board of Adjustment was slated to review the proposal through a Webex virtual meeting platform on June 9, but the incorrect meeting number and access code were included on the posted agenda.

County Corporation Counsel Grant Thomas said that even though the posted notice did include a phone number and email for people to get help if they had trouble accessing the meeting, there was concern that it would not meet the standards of open meetings law.

“Ultimately the decision was made to adjourn to avoid having any decision deemed void because of issues with the accessibility of the hearing remotely,” Thomas said. “There’s not a lot of precedent for these types of meetings.”

The meeting will have to wait at least three weeks to comply with statutory notification requirements.
