The ABCs of Door County

Gibraltar third graders will express what Door County means to them with children’s author and illustrator Nancy Carlson in an artist in residency program. Each classroom has divided up the letters of the alphabet and will write and illustrate the ABCs of Door County.

Nancy Carlson has 65 published children’s books. She shared her books with all of Gibraltar Elementary last year, and was brought back to make books with students. She is taking the students through the process of bookmaking from storyboards and thumbnail sketches to the final drafts. Students will learn to create illustrations that depict information from their writing and then they will edit their writing based on their illustration.

After the project is complete the third graders will share their ABCs of Door County books with their kindergarten reading buddies. Carlson will also read her books to the kindergarten classes and do a writing workshop for Creative Writing Club.
