The Community Garden Breaks Ground

The Community’s Garden held its official ground-breaking under brilliant blue skies on June 24 at 6:30 am. The Community’s Garden is a not-for-profit organization founded in 2009 as the result of collaboration between Door County Memorial Hospital, the City of Sturgeon Bay, and the UW Extension in Door County. Other participating organizations are Crossroads at Big Creek, the Master Gardeners of Door County, and the YMCA.

The garden, located on 16th Avenue across from the hospital and designed by John Meredith of Lakeshores Landscape and Design, will include community garden plots, a production garden for the hospital kitchens, a pond aerated with a bog system and many theme gardens designed by master gardeners from across the county.

Plots will be ready for planting by July 10. Any community member interested in obtaining a 20’ x 20’ plot for this season should call Jenny Spude at the UW Extension offices at 920.746.5994. Plots will be free for the 2010 season. Individuals and families may join the organization for a $50 membership fee.
