The Flying Pig Gallery Features Travis Lester

Travis Lester, a recent graduate of UW-Stevens Point, is a storyteller – using visual narration as his voice and image. Though very naïve at first glance, his style of painting is quite complex. Thin layers of paint and built up colors with imagery responding accordingly create a dynamic narrative in which the viewer can read as much or as little into the work as they choose.

Lester has two series of paintings currently featured at The Flying Pig entitled “Everything is Fine in the Suburbs” and “BlanketFace vs. RemoteControl.” The first features eight paintings that reflect upon his childhood. “Unfortunately, I never stayed in one place long enough to really call someplace home,” said Lester, “so instead I learned to call life home. This was my way of finding peace and place wherever I happened to be, day to day and year to year.”

The mood and palette of the “BlanketFace vs. RemoteControl” series is much lighter with Lester’s signature style of layering, under painting and sketching constant throughout. The series of five paintings features a unique diptych style of presentation that creates parallels among the contrasting subject matter and color.
