The Flying Pig Gallery of Door County Welcomes Stephen Golden

“Jazz Solo” by Stephen Golden.

Stephen Golden’s contemporary work, incorporating wood veneer marquetry techniques with those of acrylic airbrushing, will be on exhibit at the Flying Pig in Algoma throughout the summer.

Golden seeks to convey an unyielding sense of momentum by contrasting bold pigment against the alluring and often holographic hardwoods he integrates into each piece.

“The materials I choose are essential to my artistic process; in most cases I prefer to let the character of the wood speak for itself,” he said.

Golden’s experimentation with painting began in college and gradually transitioned from the use of oils to acrylics. Acrylic allows him to create subtle shading effects directly on the wood veneer as well as to add dramatic color to the artwork. His earlier focus was on using paint to render subject matter in a literal, academic fashion, while his current work emphasizes hard edges, rhythm, color and the interplay of the mixed media.

The Flying Pig Gallery and Greenspace, open 9 am – 6 pm daily, is located at N6975 Highway 42 in Algoma. For more information call 920.487.9902 or email [email protected].
