“The Rise and Fall of the Great Lakes” Screened at Crossroads

Now that the educational film The Rise and Fall of the Great Lakes is available on YouTube, Crossroads at Big Creek has shown it numerous times, and will again on Aug. 9 at 10 am in the Collins Learning Center. Conservationist Bill Mason created this geologic comedy for the National Film Board of Canada in 1968, and it was an immediate hit with educators and students. Following the 18-minute film, activities will focus on the geological history of the Door Peninsula.

Join the naturalist in a catch and release program exploring the aquatic invertebrates of Big Creek on Aug. 12. Nets will be provided, but wear clothes that can get wet.

Many kinds of insects damage leaves—gall formers, leaf miners, leaf rollers, skeletonizers – and they can all be found at Crossroads. A scavenger hunt format will make “In Search of Leaf Damage” fun for the whole family on Aug. 13.

Family programs, intended for all ages, continue Monday through Thursday at 1:30 pm, and meet at the Collins Learning Center; family programs are free and open to the public. The Collins Learning Center, located a 2041 Michigan Street, is open 1:30 – 3:30 pm daily and during scheduled activities. For more information visit crossroadsatbigcreek.com.
