The Sweet Tooth Tour

2

When my family drives up the Door Peninsula with their air mattresses, swimsuits, and extra Lactaid – I suspend my calorie counting ways. I partake in the indulgence. Away we go!

1. The sweet taste of homemade ice cream calls us to Door County Ice Cream Factory once bags are dropped in my door. We order our longtime favorite flavors: Chambers Island Fudge, Mississippi Mud Pie, and English Toffee. Yum!

2. Breakfast of champions: fresh cherry donuts from Wood Orchard Farm Market and chocolaty mochas from Leroy’s Water Street Coffee. Pass the Lactaid!

3

3. We hit the shops, and lo and behold, samples! We must try a hint of Blue Willow Shop’s dressings…it would be rude not to.

4. To allow our stomachs a chance to settle, our bodies the opportunity to burn a few calories, we walk along the breezy, beautiful shore of Whitefish Dunes State Park.

5. But it’s not long before the sweet tooth calls for more. We ride borrowed bikes through Ephraim, stopping at the Door County Confectionery. We sample fudge, fill a bag with candy, and purchase some chocolates.

6

6. We find the perfect spot to enjoy said chocolates and watch a classic Door County sunset: Anderson Dock. A chocolate-covered Oreo for me, a chocolate-covered pretzel rod for Tracy, and chocolate-covered toffee for Holly. Decadent!

7. After a full night’s rest, our blood sugar is dropping rapidly. We stop by Al Johnson’s for a breakfast of delicious Swedish pancakes topped with strawberry sauce.

8

8. The sunshine beckons us to the beach, where we soak up some fantastic rays. Those hot rays were just all the more enjoyable with some shaved ice from Malibu Moos.

9. We survived. We lived (and ate) it up.

I bid my beautiful family goodbye and decide calorie counting resumes starting now.

10. That doesn’t mean I can’t meet some of my favorite Door County ladies for a tasty meal at the Wickman House…

We order fancy cocktails, Little Devils and Chi Chis, and savor Alaskan crab legs with corn and potatoes – some less ladylike than others – while The Waterstreet Hot Shots perform fantastic bluegrass tunes.

I’m full. I’m happy. Dessert menu? Yes, please! (Calorie counting can start Monday morning…)
