The Trout are Out!

From April 20 – 22, fishermen and women will take to the waters surrounding Door and Kewaunee counties in pursuit of the biggest brown trout. Those who reel in the heaviest trout will be awarded a grand prize package valued over $1,500, including $600 in cash.

“The trout are out!” says Joseph Christensen, a Baileys Harbor summer resident and hobby fishermen, “caught one by the gill trying to jump the bow of the boat even!” he jokes as his friend and fellow fishermen Eric Williams attempts to list assorted lures used for catching brown trout: “cleos…Rapalas…downriggers…Yellow Birds.”

Fishing since age three or four, Williams will try his luck at this year’s tournament. “It’s about enjoyment,” he says of fishing. “I love being on the water and catching fish.”

After a day on the water, participants will bring their heaviest fish to the Baileys Harbor Fire Station for weigh-in, which will take place Friday from 7 – 9 pm, Saturday from 10 am – 12 pm and 7 – 9 pm, and Sunday from 10 am – 12 pm. The winner will be announced at 12 pm on Sunday. The top 10 fish will be listed on the event’s new Facebook page.

During weigh-in time, the Baileys Harbor Athletics Club will sell a variety of food and beverages including brats, hot dogs, Chicken Booyah (donated by the AC Tap), soda, coffee and beer.

The deadline to purchase tickets to participate is April 19. Ticket outlets include the 57 Depot, Cornerstone Pub, Deprey’s Kwik Stop, Mink River Basin, Hol N One Mobil Station, Greystone Castle, Little Brown Jug, Howie’s Depot, and Jungwirth Ace Hardware.
