Third Avenue Playhouse To Begin Rehearsals For Summer/Fall Season

Door County will have a few more friendly faces this week as the Third Avenue Playhouse (TAP) company members arrive to begin rehearsals for the first show of the Summer/Fall Season. The year-round professional theater in downtown Sturgeon Bay welcomes the cast of Red (running June 29-July 22) and the student interns for the summer.

Red follows abstract expressionist Mark Rothko (played by Drew Brhel) who has just landed the biggest commission in the history of modern art (a series of murals for New York’s famed Four Seasons Restaurant). In the two fascinating years that follow, Rothko works feverishly with his young assistant, Ken (Matt Frye), in his studio on the Bowery. But when Ken gains the confidence to challenge him, Rothko faces the agonizing possibility that his crowning achievement could also become his undoing.

Brhel will appear in two productions this summer: Red and Candide. He’s a TAP regular who makes his home in Milwaukee, where he has worked for Skylight Music Theatre, Next Act, Milwaukee Chamber, and the Milwaukee Rep. He has also spent many years with Shakespeare companies, including Door Shakespeare.

Making his TAP debut, Frye will also join the cast of Red and Candide. He is a Chicago-based actor who just completed the Emerging Professional Resident program at the Milwaukee Rep.

Joining TAP’s intern company is Michaela Kraft, a graduate of TAP’s StageKids program. She is a freshman at UW-Stevens Point, where she is majoring in Acting with a minor in Arts Management. Dana Cordry is the final addition to TAP’s intern team. She is a junior at Lawrence University majoring in Theatre Arts with an emphasis in performance and a strong interest in costuming.
