Third Board Resignation at Gibraltar

Lauren Bremer Ward resigned this month from the Gibraltar Area School Board, citing professional reasons pertaining to her career. Ward said she believed the six remaining board members had been working together well, and that the board was in good hands. Her term was scheduled to expire in spring 2023.

Board president Stephen Seyfer confirmed that a new member will be appointed. This winter, the board interviewed eight finalists before choosing two of them to replace Angela Sherman and Amy Carriere, who resigned in December 2021 and January 2022, respectively.

Three Districts Loosen Mask Mandates on School Buses

For the first time in two years, some Door County school districts have stopped requiring all students to wear masks while riding the bus to and from school. Sturgeon Bay Schools Superintendent Dan Tjernagel announced to families on Facebook that as of Feb. 28, the district would make masking optional for students on Kobussen buses. In addition, he noted that the Southern Door and Sevastopol districts had made similar announcements.

“The most recent CDC guidance,” Tjernagel noted, “includes a variety of changes. Among them are a clarification that the TSA [the federal Transportation Security Administration] mask mandate for public transportation does not apply to public or private schools and that universal masking is no longer recommended in settings with a low or medium COVID-19 community level.”

Support for Benesh Family

In memory of longtime Sturgeon Bay basketball coach Jim Benesh, Gibraltar High School students collected $921 in donations to give to the family of Benesh, who lost a lengthy battle with cancer.

Counselor Chelsea Roberts and Sammie Winker directed the Miracle Minute fundraising effort during the Gibraltar versus Sturgeon Bay basketball game at the end of February, the Gibraltar district announced.
