This Week at Crossroads: Birds, Bees & More

Start your weekend fun with a campfire at Crossroads at Big Creek on Feb. 3, 5-7 pm. A luminary-lit trail from the main parking lot will lead visitors to the Council Ring to enjoy fellowship around the campfire and roast some marshmallows.

The Door County Beekeepers Club will host an interactive workshop Feb. 4, 8 am – 12 pm, to teach participants about the basic equipment, tools and techniques involved in beekeeping. All participants will receive half off a club membership. The workshop fee of $25 supports restoration and pollinator plantings at Crossroads. To register, email [email protected]

A Crossroads Science Academy workshop set for Feb. 4, 1-4 pm, welcomes families and learners of all ages to stop by the Collins Learning Center to find out about community-science projects – using apps to document weather conditions, for example.

As part of Door County Reads, Crossroads is hosting a guided hike with program director Corey Batson on Feb. 5, 1 pm, during which he’ll discuss human and animal survival in the winter. Dress for the weather, and meet at the Collins Learning Center.

Then at 3 pm on Feb. 5, Mike Madden will discuss the things you need to survive out in the wilderness. The program will begin inside but will end up outdoors with a demonstration of how to start a fire.

Interested in learning about birds? Attend the next Bird Club meeting Feb. 7, 6:30 pm, when the bird-of-the-month profile will be northern cardinals, the “Valentine birds.” Batson will present “From Feathered Caps to Conservation Apps,” an overview of how the abuses of the plumage trade led to bird conservation.

The Junior Nature Club will hold its next meeting Feb. 8, 10 am. Weather permitting, preschool-aged children and their companions will visit the cedar forest, so dress for the weather. (If the weather is extreme, the club will meet in the Wildlife Room.)

The Ski for Free program is available Saturdays and Sundays, weather permitting. Visit crossroadsatbigcreek.org to check the hours of operation and trail conditions at Crossroads at Big Creek, 2041 Michigan St. in Sturgeon Bay.
