Al Johnson and Earl Willems

Al Johnson’s restaurant celebrated 60 years of serving pancakes and providing good jobs, and the bowling lanes Earl Willems installed at the Sister Bay Bowl 50 years ago gave residents another winter with something to do in Sister Bay.

Mike Matzdorff

The writer and director of the movie Feed the Fish brought Hollywood to Door County and injected some life into the peninsula winter. In November, he brought the first screening of the movie to the Door Community Auditorium, showing off the county to the locals on the big screen.

Ruslan Fedotenko

The Pittsburgh Penguins left-winger brought one of sports great symbols to Door County in August, touring the area with the Stanley Cup. The trophy carried Wilson’s Ice Cream, rode go-karts, and posed for hundreds of photos around Northern Door.

Door County YMCA

Gibraltar High School athletics had one its most successful years in decades in no small way thanks to the Fish Creek YMCA. The soccer team advanced to within a game of a trip to state and shared a conference title. The football team made its first trip to the playoffs, and the boy’s basketball team posted its first winning season in a decade. All this in large part due to the skills honed at the YMCA by the first group of kids to grow up with a program center in Northern Door.
