Tim and Sue Stone Recognized at National Philanthropy Day Awards Luncheon

The Association of Fundraising Professionals (AFP) Northeast Wisconsin Chapter awarded honors to Door County residents Tim and Sue Stone at its 2017 National Philanthropy Day Awards Luncheon on Nov. 15 at Lambeau Field Legends Club Room in Green Bay.

The Door County Land Trust, in partnership with Peninsula Music Festival, nominated the Stones for the Outstanding Lifetime Philanthropy Award, a tribute presented to an individual or family recognized widely as community philanthropists with a long and proven record of making a significant impact in their community through financial support and volunteerism/leadership for a variety of organizations.

Tim has been on the board of the Door County Land Trust in some role since 2009. He was board president for two terms and currently serves as board treasurer and chair of the Major Gifts Committee. Sue has served on the Peninsula Music Festival board of directors since 1994. She is currently president of the board, a role she has held for more than two years. Previously, she served as secretary of the board and chair of the annual campaign committee.

The Stones have a long connection to the nonprofit community of Door County that began in the 1980s and accelerated once they became fulltime residents in 2004. For more than 30 years, they have been involved with a variety of nonprofits throughout the county and have been a force in every organization fortunate enough to gain their involvement.

Their range of support is impressive. The Stones have served as board members, donors and program volunteers with The Clearing Folk School, Northern Sky Theater, Peninsula Music Festival, Midsummer’s Music, United Way of Door County, and the Door County Land Trust, among others. They were formally recognized as 2008 Philanthropists of the Year by the Door County Community Foundation. Tim and Sue continue to broaden their community involvement most recently with one of the county’s newest nonprofits, Write On, Door County.

While honored, Tim and Sue Stone said that giving back is their responsibility for reaping the rewards of living in Door County. Sue commented that everybody can do something for the groups that mean something to them. “You can’t expect it to be there for you if you don’t,” she said.
