Angela Lensch Welcomes Cheryl Bishop to Gallery

Angela Lensch Gallery welcomes local artist Cheryl Bishop to the gallery on Oct. 17, noon to 5 pm. The outdoor display will feature theorem paintings, which include fruit, flowers and holiday themes. Theorem painting came into fashion between 1810-40 when it became part of the curriculum in finishing schools. Although silk and watercolor paper was often used, tea-stained velveteen was the surface of choice. Oil pigments were applied by wrapping a small piece of velveteen or wool around the artist’s finger.

Until recently the process of completing a theorem painting was time-consuming and tedious. The chosen design was traced, separated into stencil overlays and cut with an X-ACTO knife. This is the process Bishop was taught when she studied at Fletcher Farm School for the Arts and Crafts, in Ludlow, Vermont.

Bishop has enjoyed more than 20 years of stenciling fabric, walls and furniture throughout Door County. Visit Angela Lensch Gallery on Oct. 17 to learn more about this art form.

Angela Lensch Gallery, open daily 10 am to 5 pm, is located at the south end of Egg Harbor, halfway between the Patricia Shoppe and Chief Oshkosh. For more information, visit angelalenschgallery.com or call 920.868.5088.
