Time to Celebrate

“Gold Vessels” by Wence Martinez.

The vibrant, handcrafted work of Wence and Sandra Martinez will be on display at a closing reception at Mr. Helsinki in Fish Creek on May 23, 5 – 7 pm. The couple have enjoyed a busy winter, taking their work on the road to national craft shows, and spending several weeks in Wence’s native Oaxaca to gather and dye hand-spun wool for use in his flatweave tapestries. Although Wence’s textiles and Sandra’s works on paper have been on display throughout the long winter, fresh new pieces were recently added in anticipation of the festive evening.

“This has been a whirlwind year for us,” says Sandra. “We were part of the amazing Smithsonian Craft Show in Washington, D.C. for our second consecutive year, we debuted by special invitation at the American Craft Council flagship show in Baltimore, and we were featured in a Wisconsin Public Television documentary about our life and work. It’s time to celebrate with our Door County friends!”

The show also features wall cabinets and chairs by Michael Doerr of Doerr Woodworking. “Michael has been a friend and inspiration to us throughout our careers,” says Wence. “We’re proud to be sharing space with him for this show.”
