Tips for Staying Safe in High Temperatures

The Door County Public Health Department recently released some tips for staying safe in high temperatures. Here are the tips: never leave children or pets in a parked vehicle; drink plenty of fluids; be cautious of garden hoses – water sitting in a hose in the sun can reach up to 190 degrees; do not lie or sit on pavement; be careful when handling any metal surface that’s been sitting in the sun; use sunblock; take frequent breaks if working outside. High heat can cause dehydration, heat exhaustion and heat stroke. Symptoms for heat stroke include extremely high body temperature, hot/dry skin, rapid pulse, throbbing headache, dizziness, nausea, confusion, and/or unconsciousness. Call 911 and cool the victim with shower or hose until help arrives. For more information, go to readywisconsin.wi.gov/heat/default.asp.
