Toss and Turn Until You Fall

“Sublime recorded on that board,” an Arlyn studio engineer said to Joseph Peterson and Matt Manninen as they arrived at the Austin, Texas studio to record their debut album.

“[We] could understand the significance of it” and could “feel something there that was not there,” which was intimidating, said Peterson of their first time in a studio to record.

But the band didn’t chose Arlyn studio, the studio chose them; Peterson and Manninen played a show and a recording engineer was there. The engineer offered the opportunity to another band that paid little attention to the recording prospect, which was later given to Peterson and Manninen. “It was really luck,” admitted Manninen.

After three months recording in the same studio as some of their influences and nationally known artists, including Neil Young and Bob Dylan, Joseph Peterson & The Transparent Seas debut album Toss and Turn Until You Fall was the last full length album to be recorded at Arlyn Studio. The album features songs about the transition from youth to adulthood. Peterson writes the lyrics and basic music then Manninen adds flare and complexity to the musical score.

“The most serious thing about us is the music. We want the mood and atmosphere to be light, [and we] make harmonies and melodies that sound like what the song is trying to say,” explained Peterson.

Joseph Peterson & The Transparent Seas will perform at The Hitching Post, located at 4849 Country Road T near Jacksonport, on June 16 at 9 pm. Copies of their new album will be available for purchase.
