Town of Gibraltar’s Road Brushing Guidelines

The Gibraltar Town Board published these road brushing guidelines at its meeting on Jan. 8, 2014. Click here to read more about the decision.

Here are the guidelines –

All Roads:

  • Public safety is paramount and shall be determined on a case by case basis
  • Decisions are ultimately made by the Gibraltar Town Board
  • Sightlines may need to be increased where a sightline is impaired

Speed limit of 35 mph or less

  • 2’ shoulder (gravel or paved)
  • 6’ horizontal clear zone beyond shoulder
  • 16’ vertical clearance over clear zones and road surface

Speed limit of 45 mph

  • 2’ shoulder (gravel or paved)
  • 9’ horizontal clear zone beyond shoulder
  • 16’ vertical clearance over clear zones and road surface

Notes:

  • Lower Cottage Row Road is considered separately.
  • Upper Cottage Row is considered separately.
  • Chambers Island is excluded.
  • Where there is a bike/pedestrian lane or additional shoulder it will be handled on a case by case basis.
  • These guidelines pertain to roads above the hill on Hwy. 42 north and above the hill on Hwy. 42 south.
  • For roads that are not laid in the center of the ROW the brushed back area of the road will be mirrored to the extent of the smaller side of the road.
  • Reforestation may be allowed at the discretion of the Gibraltar Town Board specifying location and species
