Toys for Tots is Back

This year, the Door Community Auditorium (DCA) in Fish Creek has been designated a drop-off location for Toys for Tots which collects new, unwrapped toys, games, and books for children who might not otherwise have a merry holiday.

And the phrase “what’s in a name” is especially relevant for Door County’s collection. A nationally organized effort by the United States Marine Corps Reserve, Toys for Tots is administered locally by the Sturgeon Bay Jaycees under the name “Toys for Kids” to benefit Door County’s children.

“By collecting under the name Toys for Kids all donated toys, books, and games will be distributed in our county. Monetary donations to Toys for Kids will enable us to purchase the balance of what we need for our children. This is a wonderful opportunity for everyone to participate in the spirit of the season,” said Toys for Kids coordinator Marsha Price.

From its humble beginnings more than 60 years ago, the Toys for Tots campaign, supported by a not-for-profit foundation, has grown to play a major role in the development of America’s most valuable natural resource – children. The campaign has distributed more than 370 million toys to 173 million children. In 2007, the Toys for Kids Program supplied 450 families with gifts and collected $6,000 in donations.

Donations to the Toys for Kids collection boxes can be made through Thursday, December 18. The boxes will be collected by retired Marines on Friday, December 19. All contributions are tax deductible.
