Traveling Tapestries

“Totem” by Sandra and Wence Martinez.

On Sept. 5, Wence and Sandra Martinez make their Chicago debut at the Green Home Chicago Design Center in the West Loop. Their weavings and works on paper will be on display through October, with select works remaining through the winter.

The show will feature a raffle, with prizes including one of Wence and Sandra’s works, as well as a piece of furniture donated by Green Home Chicago. Proceeds will benefit youth arts programs at the National Museum of Mexican Art, who recently accepted a promised gift of a Martinez piece from a collector. “I developed my skills and tenacity through a scholarship given to me to study in Mexico City,” says Wence, “and Sandra benefitted from youth programming at the Milwaukee Art Museum, so giving back to such a program is a natural fit for us.”

The opening reception runs from 5 – 9 pm and coincides with Gallery Night in Chicago.

Wence and Sandra’s work will also be on display as part of the “Black, White With a Bit of Color” exhibit at Kohler ARTspace in Sheboygan now through Oct. 5. The John Michael Kohler Arts Center is also showing one of Wence’s large tapestries.

Martinez Studio, located on Highway 57 south of Jacksonport, is open from 11 am – 4 pm and closed on Tuesdays. For more information call 823.2154 or visit MartinezStudio.com.
