Triathlon Nears Capacity

• Johnny Vieth, who operated Johnny’s Cottage Restaurant in Sister Bay for 42 years, died May 30 at age 92. Vieth was Sister Bay’s “King of Buttermilk Pancakes” and gave a young Al Johnson his first restaurant job. Vieth was a charter member of the Peninsula Golf Association and the Sister Bay Lions Club. He was an active member of Liberty Grove VFW Post 8337 and American Legion Billy Weise Post 527. He worked at Peninsula Golf Course until last year. He joined the army Air Force the day after Pearl Harbor and served in Panama throughout the war.

• Representatives from Door County’s “Sister County” in China visited the peninsula over Memorial Day Weekend. The representatives of Jingdezhen visited the home of Door County Administrator Mike Serpe to formalize the sister county relationship with a document signing. Serpe visited Jingdezhen last October.

• The Door County Half Iron Triathlon reached 80 percent capacity, with over 800 registrants for the July 18 event. The Sprint Triathlon, scheduled for July 17, has more than 700 registrants. Each race is capped at 1,000 participants. To register visit http://www.doorcountytriathlon.com.

• Baileys Harbor appointed Jim Parent, Bryan Nelson, and Dave Hansell to a bike route planning committee. The town is beginning work on a comprehensive bike plan similar to those recently completed by Gibraltar, Egg Harbor, and the City of Sturgeon Bay.
