Twenty Get Their Kicks on the Peninsula Park Six

A casual Sunday round on the short course kicked off the big event of the week: the Resorters Tournament at Peninsula State Park Golf Course. Winners in both the Men’s and Women’s Divisions – Andrew Spengler and Amy Gehrke – carded scores of 1-under-par, 17. Mike Popiel and Kevin Briel finished with 18s. Twenty players participated in the event at the six-hole, par-3 course along Highway 42.

Spengler, a top golfer at NorthBrook in Luxemburg, cleaned up in Sunday’s contests, winning the skins game, longest putt on #6 and closest to the pin on #1 and #2. Jim Wenzel won the closest-to-the-pin prize on the fifth hole, and Gehrke sank the longest putt on #4.

Because of heavy rain early Monday morning, PGA general manager Jason Daubner delayed the start of the three-day-long tournament by two hours. By 9 am, he sent out the first groups of the day: the women’s foursomes. Before the matches, he reminded players they’d have a free drop from casual water if a ball wound up in a puddle.

Daubner had just two players withdraw – one because of injury and another due to illness – from the field of 74 people.

The 97-year-old match-play tournament attracts many of the same vacationers and local players every year. Grouped based on handicaps, the men played in Divisions A through H and the championship bracket this year, and the women participated for Championship and Class A titles.

Daubner said he knows people are busy, but he’d love to see more young players in the tournament. Only one junior golfer entered this year: a player from Madison who won free golf rounds with his father just for signing up.

Golfing to Support Baseball

The Egg Harbor Men’s Club had 31 teams signed up early for its annual golf outing on Aug. 27, and there’s still space for more.

Event organizer Eric DeJardine said the $70 entry fee buys each player 18 holes of golf, a lunch from Jimmy John’s and many chances for prizes for outstanding scores or for winning games on the course and on the side.

DeJardine asks teams and individuals to sign up by Aug. 20 or so for the 10 am shotgun start a week later at Idlewild Golf Club. To reserve a tee time, email [email protected]. Players and teams do not need to pay their fees until the day of the outing.

That entry fee helps the Egg Harbor Men’s Club maintain and improve the men’s baseball league field in Egg Harbor, said DeJardine, who’s 39 and has played for the Egg Harbor Indians for 22 years. In recent years, the club has helped to cover the costs of a new beer stand, new scoreboard and covered dugouts. It also helps to pay for insurance and umpires, supports Egg Harbor Little League field improvements and provides scholarship help to outstanding ballplayers.
