Two Artists Highlighted at Charlene’s Gallery Ten

“Dodge Ball Anyone?” by Jim Hill.

Charlene’s Gallery Ten in Gills Rock is currently featuring the artwork of Jim Hill and Christine Meissner.

Hill’s works are on display as a solo show in the second floor salon. At 70 years of age, Hill has been an avid practicing artist since childhood. Four years of high school art classes and subsequent honors and exhibitions followed by sideline studies of art history in college laid the groundwork for a lifetime of creativity.

“In creating works of art, I am attempting to convey emotions that are part of the human experience and to represent the beauty of human form, primarily the face,” says artist Jim Hill

With a few exceptions, Hill’s works tend to be monochromatic. By using a single color, Hill feels it allows him to convey more powerfully the desired emotion or mood.

His primary technique is stippling or pointillism, where the one dot of ink is applied at a time.

“I love the soft, almost hazy image that this technique promotes and the subtle changes between light and shadow that it allows. In addition, it gives me the control I need to produce the outcome that I seek.”

In the Tower Gallery, an unusual collection of metal works by Milwaukee artist Christine Meissner will be on exhibit in conjunction with the works of Jim Hill.

“After taking my first calligraphy class over 20 years ago…I was hooked,” says Meissner. “I began experimenting combining calligraphy with other medium – watercolors, acrylics, collage, metal, found objects and handmade paper.”

Her current involvement with copper foil is intriguing in that she embosses, debosses, stretches, texturizes and patinates the metal to create her detailed imagery. The copper changes color when heated and at times she blackens it with liver of sulfur and turns it green or blue with oxidizing agents.
