“Just a Bowl” by Carol Schalla

Carol Schalla’s favorite medium has always been pastel because of its intense color and immediacy. Her paintings range from representational landscapes to soulful animals, and she creates each on archival sanded pastel paper, which grabs the small particles of pure pigment that make pastels so luminous. You can see Schalla’s works on display April through May at the Unitarian Universalist Fellowship Gallery, 10341 Water St. (Hwy 42) in north Ephraim.

Originally from Chicago, Schalla concluded a 25-year career in the home-decorating field as Midwest Living Magazine’s senior home editor. Work-related trips to Door County fueled her interest in the area, and upon retiring in 2013, she moved up and designed and built her own home.

Mostly self-taught as an artist, Schalla has been juried into the Hardy Gallery and chosen for the Miller Art Museum’s emerging-artist booth at last year’s Sturgeon Bay Art Fest. She augments her skills through the Peninsula School of Art’s yearly pastel workshops.
