Shepherd of the Bay Lutheran Church will present The United Voices of Praise Gospel Choir in an evening concert on July 18 at 7 pm.
The United Voices of Praise Gospel Choir of Milwaukee has its roots in several church choirs. The St. Philip’s Lutheran Church Gospel Choir was started by teacher Ned Goode in the 1970s. Since St. Philip’s membership was almost totally African American, Goode wanted to develop and present church music from the great African American treasury.
St. Marcus Lutheran Church’s Gospel Choir was begun around 1985 by Darlene Grams, an inter-arts major at the University of Wisconsin – Milwaukee. The two church Gospel choirs sang together for a few special events and found great satisfaction in combining their talents. The “touring” choir gained more momentum as several members from other Lutheran churches in Milwaukee began to rehearse and sing with them on a regular basis. They officially adopted the name “The United Voices of Praise” when performing outside of St. Marcus.
Darlene Grams is still the director and the primary accompanists are Mark Jeske on piano, bassist Carolos Whiting, and drummer Bob Buss.
There is no charge for admission. A freewill offering will be taken. After the concert, there will be a reception in the fellowship hall to meet and talk to the choir. Shepherd of the Bay is located at 11836 Highway 42 in Ellison Bay.
