Upcoming Classes at the Savory Spoon

Savory Spoon Cooking School in Ellison Bay is featuring two distinct cooking classes:  “Cake Decorating Like a Pro” with guest chef Kathleen Meisiner, and a homemade ravioli class with in-house pastatier Kathy McCarthy.

“Cake Decorating Like a Pro” is set for Saturday, August 15 at 9:30 am. Kathleen Meisiner, owner of Kathleen’s Cakes in Shorewood, will teach participants the easy secrets bakeries use to make their cakes so appealing. By employing a few simple tools, participants will learn to torte, fill, frost, pipe and embellish anything from cupcakes and layer cakes to cookies and gingerbread houses. Participants will also learn how to use the CakeVase® to create a beautiful centerpiece on homemade or store-bought cakes.

Meisiner has been a part of the food industry since she was a teenager, and in 2007, she entered Oprah’s Next Big Idea Contest with an idea to streamline the process of creating her centerpiece cakes with no cake decorating experience. The CakeVase® was chosen top 10 out of 6,000 entries nationwide which led to two appearances on QVC and the launch of an entirely new idea. The CakeVase® is now available in the U.S. and Canada in stores, catalogs and online sites such as Amazon.

Savory Spoon’s last pasta workshop of the season is set for Wednesday, August 19 and will feature ravioli. Homemade pasta is economical to make, and the “pastabilities” are endless using fresh vegetables and herbs from the garden. Instructor Kathy McCarthy will conduct this fun class that explores the art and techniques of making this tasty pasta. A family-style dinner of fresh ravioli, fresh greens, and warm baguette bread is planned for the end of class.
