Upcoming Write On, Door County Workshops: Using the News to Spark Creativity, Revise Like A Pro

As writers and observers in the world, engaging in what we read in the news can feel overwhelming. How do we make meaning of the media to positively impact our emotional, spiritual, and intellectual lives? Artists Tami Mohamed Brown and MJ Gabrielsen will show you ways to use printed news to construct new ideas in their workshop, “This Is Not a Newspaper Blackout Poem,” April 22, 9 am – noon. The workshop is offered by Write On, Door County. Tuition is $45; financial assistance is available. This workshop is appropriate for both beginning and experienced writers working in poetry or prose.

Brown and Gabrielsen met when they took Write On’s annual Writing and Yoga retreat in August 2015. The two artists have remained in contact and are excited to return to Door County for a residency at Write On and to lead this community workshop.

Whether you are at the idea stage or editing a final draft, working on a book project is a daunting task. How do you not only spark your imagination but keep the creative fire burning to see your project through to the end? Publisher and book editor Hanna Kjeldbjerg shares tips on how to move forward in your work in a special day-long class offered through Write On, Door County on Saturday, April 29, 9 am – 4 pm. Tuition for the 7-hour class is $95, which includes lunch. Class size is limited to 10 participants.

About her workshop, Kjeldbjerg said, “Beyond Show, Don’t Tell is designed to help writers find the places in their manuscript that can be cracked open and taken to the next level. Every scene, every sentence is an opportunity, and writers can expect to leave with a few tricks up their sleeves for how to take their writing ‘beyond.’”

Kjeldbjerg is a writer, editor and publisher with Beaver’s Pond Press, based in the Minneapolis/St. Paul area. She is spending a week-long residency at Write On.
