Update: Memorial Pole Refurbished Once Before

In our July 22 issue we told you about the re-furbishing of the memorial pole in Peninsula State Park. Ephraim resident Margot Goode informed us that it’s not the first time the pole has been updated.

The original pole lasted until the 1960s before it suffered severe rotting. That’s when the Ephraim Men’s Club, spurred by the efforts of Spencer Gould, launched an initiative to raise funds to replace the pole. The replica was sculpted by Adlai Hardin and included a new band designed by Chief Roy Oshkosh to honor the Menominee Tribe. That pole was dedicated in 1970.
