Vanderhoof On Board as New Literary Editor

The Pulse is pleased to introduce their new Literary Editor, Mindi Vanderhoof. A recent graduate from the University of Wisconsin-Green Bay, Vanderhoof majored in English and minored in Women’s Studies.

Vanderhoof says, “I’m looking forward to meeting new writers and publishing great literature.”

While at UWGB, she worked on the staff of Sheepshead Review, the school’s journal of the arts, and held positions as the Nonfiction Editor, Assistant Editor-in Chief, Special Sections Editor, and Alumni Issue Editor-in-Chief. Vanderhoof also was in charge of interviews while on staff, and she was able to meet with some pretty amazing writers, including Michael Perry, Jane Hamilton, Marilyn Taylor, and Ted Kooser. In putting together a special tribute section to former Wisconsin Poet Laureate and retired UWGB professor, Denise Sweet, Vanderhoof corresponded with writers throughout the Midwest.

Last summer, Vanderhoof interned with the Pulse, running the annual Hal Grutzmacher Writers’ Exposé and Photography Jubilee. Before working with the Pulse though, she was no stranger to Door County or the newspaper world. Vanderhoof worked countless hours on the Sevastopol High School Newspaper, The Pioneer Chips, and really credits her experience with the paper and her advisor Linda Thompson for getting her interested in the publishing world.

Until her time at the Pulse last summer, Vanderhoof had no idea that there was such a vibrant literary community in her own back yard. She says, “I’m thrilled that I didn’t have to move to a big city to find a job doing what I love.”

As for Vanderhoof’s literary tastes, she claims they are quite eclectic, saying, “If forced to choose a favorite all-time author, I would have to choose Kurt Vonnegut and a close second would have to be Tim O’Brien.”

Some of her favorite novels include Lorrie Moore’s Anagrams, Vonnegut’s Breakfast of Champions, O’Brien’s In the Lake of the Woods, and Zora Neale Hurston’s Their Eyes Were Watching God.
