Vikings Beat Blazers in Baseball Opener

Gibraltar/Washington Island’s baseball team opened the season at home Tuesday with a 6-3 Packerland Conference victory over NEW Lutheran.

The Vikings’ Noah Greene pitched the first six innings to record the win, allowing five hits with two walks and two earned runs while striking out nine. Jack Duffy closed out the seventh inning, giving up a run with two walks and striking out one.

Will Friedenfels accounted for three of Gibraltar/Washington Island’s eight hits with a triple. Carl Burgess added a double and drove in three runs. Aidan Purinton doubled with 2 RBI, while Brady Kita also had a two-base hit.

Clippers Sail Past Preble

Sturgeon Bay needed 10 innings Tuesday to win its non-conference season opener at Memorial Field over Green Bay Preble, 7-6.

The game was tied 4-4 after seven innings, after which each team scored a run in the eighth and ninth inning to extend the contest before Sturgeon Bay plated the winning run in the bottom of the 10th.

Five different Clipper pitchers took the mound, with Brody Kollath closing out the final two innings to record the victory.

Sturgeon Bay tallied five hits scattered among five different players, with Emmett Braschnewitz’s double the only extra-base hit.
