No. 8-seeded Gibraltar opened the WIAA boys basketball tournament Tuesday in the Division 5 regional quarterfinals with a 73-34 home victory over No. 9-seeded Wausaukee.
Will Friedenfels led three Viking players in double figures with a game-high 16 points. Jake Schar added 14 points, and Nathan Merkel scored 11 more.
Gibraltar, which improved its season record to 10-14 overall, advances to Friday’s regional semifinal at No. 1-seeded Florence.
Pioneers Ousted by Oneida Nation
No. 13-seeded Sevastopol saw its season come to an end Tuesday after losing its Division 5 regional quarterfinal at No. 4-seeded Oneida Nation, 73-55.
The Pioneers (2-23) were led by Nick Peterson with 15 points. Zaul Valdivia added 11 points.
Clippers Clobbered at Campbellsport
In Division 3, No. 11-seeded Sturgeon Bay (7-17) lost its regional quarterfinal at No. 6-seeded Campbellsport, 76-48.
Eagles in Rematch with Raiders
Door County’s other Division 3 boys basketball team, Southern Door, which received No. 2 seed with an opening-round bye, hosts a regional semifinal Friday against No. 10-seeded Two Rivers, a 47-34 quarterfinal winner at No. 7-seeded Kewaskum.
This will be the second time this season the Eagles face the Raiders. Southern Door won the non-conference contest 76-39 on Jan. 31 at Two Rivers.
Friday’s winner plays for the regional title Saturday against the winner of the other semifinal between Campbellsport and No. 3-seeded Oostburg.
