Vikings Win D5 Regional Boys Hoops Title

Gibraltar’s boys basketball team won its second consecutive WIAA Division 5 regional championship last weekend.

The No. 8-seeded Vikings advanced to the sectional semifinals with a 68-35 victory Saturday at No. 4-seeded Oneida Nation.

Gibraltar, which jumped out to a 33-12 lead at halftime, had two players end up scoring in double figures. Jake Schar tallied a game-high 30 points, and Braden Sitte added 12 points.

Ethan Danforth led the Thunderhawks with 16 points, followed by Donovan Danforth with 10 points.

The Vikings, who improved to 12-14 overall, play their sectional semifinal game Thursday at 7 pm in Suring against No. 2-seeded Three Lakes, the team Gibraltar defeated in last year’s sectional semifinal.

This year’s winner advances to the sectional championship game next Saturday at 2 pm in Rhinelander to face the winner of the other semifinal between Wausau Newman and Stevens Point Pacelli.

Vikings Topple Top Seed

Gibraltar advanced to the regional championship game by winning its semifinal Friday at No. 1-seeded Florence, 59-39.

The Vikings, who led 25-24 at halftime, had three players end up scoring in double figures. Carl Burgess tallied a game-high 21 points, followed by Sitte with 14 points and Schar with 11.

Dominic DeMuri led the Bobcats with 10 points.
