Virge Temme of Virge Temme Architecture Inc. of Sturgeon Bay was selected to co-author LEEDing the Way: Domestic Architecture for the Future, just released by Schiffer Publishing. The book is a unique and engaging study of LEED-certified, low-energy, and other levels of environmentally sustainable houses being built today. Primary author is E. Ashley Rooney, creator of numerous books on architecture, art and interior design.
The book features the work of 28 architects and builders throughout the United States whose objective is to reduce energy consumption and to harmonize homes with the environment. Respectful of nature and its resources, these experts describe the directions they take to create comfortable homes for their clients.
The homes featured in the book meet a variety of guidelines: LEED, a point-based system with specific certification criteria; Green, a construction standard based on reduction of energy use; Passive, a design standard that can result in a super-insulated, airtight home; and Natural, a type of “green” construction using natural resources without technological intervention.
Three homes designed by Virge Temme are featured in the book. These include two Passive House-designed homes in Door County: a rustic log home and a modern home which earned LEED Platinum recognition, as well as a near net-zero-energy cottage built in Marinette, Wis.
