Volunteer Voices

Sara Miller

Actually, it’s not a question at all for Sara RS Miller. There was never any doubt in the mind of this “semi-retired” computer programmer from Milwaukee. When asked if she would be willing to join the board of Door Shakespeare, she never hesitated.

“I knew that by being on this board, I’d get to come to Door County at least six times a year!” Miller proclaimed.

Miller has longtime ties to Door County as her family visited and vacationed here since she was seven. She literally grew up with American Folklore Theatre and volunteered for them as well. But when asked to come “on board” with Door Shakespeare, she knew that this smaller and lesser-known organization had needs that she could fill.

“Volunteering is in my blood. It was expected of us growing up. Door Shakespeare needed help with the financial aspect of the business and that’s what I know,” said Miller. So, she blended her love of live theatre with her business background and the perfect volunteering opportunity was born.

Miller truly believes in Door Shakespeare and its educational aspects.

“I love theatre and I knew the nuances of the business,” she said. “What I do at Door Shakespeare makes me feel as though I’m making a difference.”

One of the best things about volunteering for Miller is the relationships that you form. “You get to know the actors and learn about them as people,” she shared. “You have real social interactions that are actually face to face!”

You can actually see the enthusiasm and excitement for Door Shakespeare in the eyes of Miller as she talks about watching this organization grow.

“It’s wonderful that there are enough people here who believe in the concept and keep the organization growing. Door Shakespeare gives exposure to one of the greatest writers in the world,” she said.

I think that Shakespeare himself would agree that Miller deserves a standing ovation for all that she does behind the scenes to make each season a success. Bravo Sara Miller!
