Volunteers Still Needed for Door County Pond Hockey Tournament

Nearly 50 teams are expected to compete in the Door County Pond Hockey Tournament on Kangaroo Lake in Baileys Harbor on Feb. 8.

Organizers are still looking for volunteer scorekeepers, setup crews and breakdown crews for the dozen lake rinks that will be needed for the tournament. Volunteers will receive tournament gear

The tournament has grown from just five teams in 2013 to the popular event it is today, but it’s not just for the players: Spectators can enjoy food, beverages, funnel cakes and heaters in a warming tent on the lake, and a pleasure-skating rink will be open for kids and spectators.

Pond hockey is a modified version of hockey that’s usually played on lakes, ponds and streams using smaller rinks, short sideboards, no goalies and just four players per side. The high-scoring style encourages greater puck-handling skills and takes the emphasis off of physical play. Teams will compete for the coveted Stanley Thermos trophy.
