Walk or Run This: A Walk through Historic Downtown Sturgeon Bay

by Victoria Linstrom

If you’re up for an urban walk or jog, consider this Sturgeon Bay loop that takes you from the East to West Waterfront and back, and offers a little bit of everything.

Start at the end of 3rd Avenue outside On Deck, travel the half mile down to Michigan Street, then go across the steel bridge to the West Waterfront – which always offers some beautiful views and a nice look at the new construction of the Door County Maritime Museum’s Kress Maritime Lighthouse Tower.

From there, continue on North Madison Avenue until you reach Scaturo’s Bakery and Cafe, which is a great place to stop before heading back. Don’t forget to take in the view of the shipyards and bay in the distance.

On the way back, hang a right on East Maple Street for a trip over the Oregon Street Bridge. Then take a left on 3rd Avenue, and you’re back where you started.

The route checks in at about two and a half miles, so you can easily add a bit to turn it into a 5K. Some slight inclines and declines vary the topography just enough to work both sides of the legs. There are also plenty of wonderful shops, restaurants and coffee shops along the way if you want a walk/run with more manageable chunks.
