Walker signs budget bill

• Gov. Scott Walker signed the two-year state budget into law Sunday, June 26 at Fox Valley Metal-Tech Inc. in Ashwaubenon. Walker vetoed 50 provisions from the final bill, which raises spending by $1.1 billion over two years (1.8 percent) but leaves the state with an estimated $300 million surplus by 2013.

• Gibraltar High School earned a place on Newsweek’s Best High Schools list, one of 12 in Wisconsin to earn the honor. It’s the second straight year the school has landed on the list.

Newsweek’s rankings are weighted heavily toward college prep, with 25 percent of scoring based on graduation rate, 25 percent on college entry, and 25 percent on advanced placement tests taken.

Ten percent of the scoring is based on SAT and ACT scores, 10 percent on average advanced placement test scores, and 5 percent on the number of advanced placement courses offered.
