Washington Island Airport Hosts Death’s Door Barbeque Competition

In June, Governor Scott Walk signed a proclamation naming Death’s Door Barbeque Competition as an “Official State Barbeque Championship,” and twenty-two teams have signed up to compete at the Washington Island competition on Aug. 25.

Contestants will compete for prize money totaling $5,000 in the categories of chicken, pork ribs, pulled pork, beef brisket and sauce. The barbeque will be open to the public free of charge from 10 am – 5 pm at the Washington Island Airport. The event includes vendor booths, children’s activities, food booths and the chance to taste competition barbeque. Visitors will also get to see, taste and smell world-class grill masters in action.

There will also be a raffle with prizes like a Traeger Texas Style BBQ Pellet Grill, a Yamaha engine, half a hog, Milwaukee Brewer tickets and a weekend for two in Ellison Bay. Raffle tickets are $5 and available at The Red Cup, The Washington Island Ferry Line and other Washington Island locations.

The Fatum Brothers Jazz Orchestra, a nationally recognized 15-piece big band/jazz group, will perform at 5:30 pm to close the competition. Tickets for the concert can be purchased in advance at various Washington Island locations for $10 and will be available for $15 at the door.

Vendor booths and sponsorships are still available.

The Kansas City Barbeque Society officially sanctions this barbeque event. For more information and to register as a contestant or vendor, visit
