Washington Island Earth Day Celebration

The Earth Day celebration begins at sunrise – approximately 5:51 am – at Percy Johnson County Park on Washington Island. Readings of nature writings by Washington Island residents and visitors past and present will be read, including excerpts from A Gleam Across the Wave by Arthur and Evelyn Knudsen, and Jens Jacobsen’s poetry. Present day authors and readers are welcome.

At 12 pm, there will be a luncheon at Bread & Water with speaker John Delwiche. His presentation, Earth Day Abstract, reflects upon the practice of stewardship and the role of observation inherent with caretakers of the earth.

At 4:40 pm, there will be a blessing of the animals at the Butterfly House, 1349 Main Road. Bring an animal on leash, caged, or in arms to join the procession. This ecumenical service is inclusive for all faith traditions.

At 6 pm, the 2014 Town of Washington Board Meeting at the Community Center Gymnasium will include a summary of Washington Island Earth Day and announcement of an air quality monitoring station being established on Washington Island.
