Washington Island Ferry Celebrates 75 Years

As the Washington Island Ferry Line crew prepares for their 2015 peak season, they’ll also be looking forward to celebrating a milestone anniversary. For 75 years, the Washington Island Ferry Line has provided safe and reliable round-trip service to residents and visitors of Washington Island.

As a family owned business, the ferry line is in its fourth generation of leadership, under the management of President and General Manager Hoyt Purinton. Hoyt’s father and former Washington Island Ferry Line Captain Richard Purinton has dedicated more than 40 years to the ferry. “Speaking for myself, and also our ferry crew members, many of whom have 20-40 years with this company, it’s a privilege to serve the community in which we live,” he shared. “The ferry line’s success the past 75 years is a reflection of the islanders and many families who have vacationed here. It’s not a story of instant success, but rather slow and measured progress that mirrored the island as a whole.”

With stable demand, the ferry crew can look forward to another 75 years of service. Purinton predicts, “Our future may bring small improvements in our main ferry service and perhaps a wider look toward enhancement of existing services.”
