Washington Island Schools Adjusting Schedule

• The Washington Island School District is adjusting its schedule to start three minutes early in the morning, at 8:21 am instead of 8:24, and end two minutes later, at 3:33 pm instead of 3:31. The change starts Monday, Feb. 17, will last the rest of the year and won’t affect bus schedules.

The adjustments were made because of the many days of missed school.

“There’s a certain expectancy, there’s a certain security with knowing what the calendar is,” said district administrator Tim Raymond. “To add a couple minutes in the morning and a couple in the afternoon and maintain the security in the continuity without major adjustments to the calendar adds less stress to the parents, students and staff. Those couple of minutes will make a difference.”

• The Michigan Street Bridge in Sturgeon Bay will be closed on Monday, Feb. 17, from 8 am to noon, and Wednesday, Feb. 19, from 11 am to 3 pm.

Crews will be repairing the “dolphin” on the southwest side of the bridge, or the structures in the river that protect the sides of the bridge. The dolphin was struck by a freighter on Saturday, Jan. 11, but the Department of Transportation said the bridge wasn’t damaged.

The cost of the work is estimated at $30,000.
