Washington Island Seeks Grant to Acquire 21 Acres

The Town of Washington has applied for a 25% matching grant as part of the Urban Green Space subprogram of the Knowles-Nelson Stewardship Program to assist with purchasing approximately 21 acres of land on which to develop additional public park space. The property includes more than 1,000 feet of Lake Michigan frontage. The town also plans to develop the site for hiking/biking trails, open green space, picnic areas, a beach area, winter recreational activities, and access to Lake Michigan for fishing and kayaking.

The Wisconsin Department of Natural Resources (DNR) has determined that prohibiting hunting is necessary to protect public safety because of the parcel’s proximity to residential dwellings and a public roadway.

Obtain a copy of the DNR’s initial assessment of the allowed nature-based outdoor activities by downloading it at dnr.wisconsin.gov/topic/Stewardship/News or by emailing [email protected].

The public is encouraged to submit comments regarding the proposed grant. Comments are due by Oct. 27 to the Department of Natural Resources, c/o Jessica Terrien, 2984 Shawano Ave., Green Bay, WI 54313.
