Weekend Recap

3

I burnt my freckled skin and swatted at pesky mayflies with fervor, but nothing could keep me from soaking in this first rays of the summer sun.

1_To welcome the warm weekend ahead, my boyfriend Luke and I stopped by The Garage at Husby’s on Friday evening for my first outdoor entertainment event of the 2014 summer season.

With PBR in hand, I visited with friends just returning to the county after a winter away and tapped my toes to the tunes of The Offseason.

2_Sunshine flooded my room on Saturday morning – waking me in time to swing down to Jacksonport and take in the annual Maifest parade. Luke and I snacked on Frooties while the floats, tractors, and bands passed by before checking out the art fair, where I bought lilac-scented soap and he bought beer-scented soap. We then ventured to the food vendors and savored butter-soaked corn on the cob.

3_A beer sounded best after a busy morning. Luke and I popped by Door County Brewing Company for their opening day, meeting our friend Elizabeth to try some delicious brews and grab a tasty burrito from Nistebox.

4_After a rest, I tied my Cornerstone apron stings around my waist and served young and old, visitors and locals, burgers, pizza, and prime ribs. A busy shift called for a refreshing beer before calling it a night.

5_Bright and early Sunday morning, Luke and I packed up a winter’s worth of creative work – photography by him and luminaries by me – and set up a table at the Baileys Harbor Farmers Market, a first for both of us. I’ll admit, watching strangers walk past, study, and comment on my work was both a frightening and exhilarating experience. Thankfully, we were both met with positive reactions and more sales than expected!

6_To unwind, we pulled up to the ball field and watched some County League Baseball with friends.

7_We spruced up before attending American Folklore Theatre’s annual “Raise the Curtain” fundraising event at The Alpine. The lively event featured a silent auction, delicious dinner, and live performances by the theater company’s cast members, writers, and interns. The event also included the reveal of the company’s new name: Northern Sky Theater. (Turn to page _ to read more about the name change.)

8_The sunshine beckoned me from my bed on Monday morning as well. Soon I was on the Peninsula State Park Golf Course Driving Range watching Luke practice his swing before taking a swing or two or three myself. He did his best to teach me the fundamentals, offered a few tips, but I’ll freely admit the sport does not come naturally to me.

9_After spending the day in the heat of the bay side, we trekked across the county to cool off at the lakeside. Both of us embarked on a Door County first – climbing the 97 steps up Cana Island Lighthouse and taking in the epic view. A brewing storm drove us back indoors where we concluded a holiday weekend the right way – with brats and beer.
