Wellness Center of Door County Announces Katie Schnorr as Director of Development

• The Wellness Center of Door County is pleased to announce the addition of Katie Schnorr as its Director of Development. This new organizational role will encompass fundraising, grant writing, volunteer cultivation and recognition, and creating/maintaining connections with individuals, businesses and foundations in the Door County community and beyond.

A graduate of Brown University, with a Master’s Degree from National-Louis University, Schnorr has experience in the non-profit sector (City Year Chicago, Isadoora Theatre Company) and had a successful career as an educator for 15 years. She is also an award-winning poet, a singer and a contributing editor to Door County Living magazine.

Schnorr and her husband live on a farmstead in Southern Door County, where they are raising two young daughters.

• Ten business and industry partnerships that encourage students to learn about the workplace and various careers, including the Door/Kewaunee Business and Education Partnership, received a Business Friends of Education award during the 75th annual Wisconsin Association for Career and Technical Education Conference in Appleton.

State Superintendent Tony Evers commended the recipients of his 2011 Business Friends of Education awards for recognizing the importance of partnering with local schools to grow Wisconsin’s economy through public education.

“These Business Friends of Education are true leaders in advancing initiatives that support the career development of our students,” Evers said. “Their partnerships with local school districts demonstrate a shared vision for providing opportunities for students that prepare them for the workforce or further education.”

The Door/Kewaunee Business and Education Partnership ties local businesses to schools in both Wisconsin counties. The partnership provides opportunities for students in numerous career pathways, including construction, health occupations, and business and information technology. Tara LeClair accepted the award on behalf of the partnership.

• PGA Golf Professional Paul Becker has renewed a lease with Baylake Bank to operate Maxwelton Braes Golf Course. Becker entered into agreement with the bank and assumed day-to-day management responsibilities for the course last summer, and will be operating in similar fashion for 2011.

Originally from Door County, Becker served as director of Golf for Blackwolf Run and Whistling Straights in Kohler, Wisconsin; assistant executive director of the Wisconsin State Golf Association; and has extensive additional golf course management experience.

The 18-hole golf course is part of the Maxwelton Braes Golf Resort property currently available for sale through Baylake Bank. The resort property also includes an 18,000 square foot clubhouse that contains a bar and restaurant, a 200-person banquet facility, and 12 lodging units. At this time, only the golf course is open for business.

• Certified Financial Planner® Grace Rossman of Sturgeon Bay, a financial associate with Thrivent Financial for Lutherans, has qualified for Summit Circle for 2010. Eight percent of Thrivent Financial’s approximately 2,400 financial representatives qualified for this honor.

Rossman and her husband Glen are with Thrivent Financial’s Northeast Wisconsin Regional Financial Office, serving Lutherans and their family members in Door County since 1989. She provides financial guidance and solutions to help clients achieve their financial goals.

• Unity registered nurse Cindy Meyer of Sturgeon Bay achieved recognition as a Certified Hospice and Palliative Nurse®. Meyer provides patient care in private homes and assisted living facilities in northern Door County.

Nursing staff become eligible to sit for the certification exam after completing 2,000 hours or having an equivalent of two years experience in the fields of hospice and palliative care. Staff members are certified for a period of four years and obtain recertification through the testing process.

• The Door County Economic Development Corporation and the UW-Green Bay Small Business Development Center will be offering free, one-on-one business counseling sessions on Thursday, May 5 from 8:30 am – 5 pm, for any new or existing business owners in Door County.

Chuck Brys, business counselor for the Small Business Development Center, will be providing advice on business planning, financing and other issues. Brys is a CPA and former chief financial officer for several Wisconsin companies, with over 30 years of business experience and knowledge.

• A new Workplace Wellness Program will now be available to local businesses through the Door County YMCA. Employee wellness is a growing concern of every business – whether it is based on the need to reduce health care costs and absenteeism or to ensure a happier and more productive work place.

Workplace Wellness programming will be available to any business of any size that wishes to participate. Programming will be coordinated through the Y, eliminating the need for each individual HR departments to find the time to create wellness programming for their employees. Uniformed programming will also allow employee groups to “challenge” each other to greater participation. Special incentives will be available to corporate members.

• Wednesday, May 18 from 8 am – 12:30 pm, Door County Economic Development Corporation and the Door County Visitor Bureau will present a free, half-day seminar on succession planning for Door County business owners. The event will take place at the Paul J. Bertschinger Community Center, located at 7860 Highway 42 in Egg Harbor. Topics to be addressed during the half-day seminar will include: Introduction to Business Succession Planning, Transitioning a Family Business, and Business Valuation.

The agenda also will provide for facilitated small group discussion and networking opportunities. Speakers will include legal experts, accountants, realtors, and business owners from Door County and across the state of Wisconsin. • Golden LivingCenter-Dorchester in Sturgeon Bay is celebrating Skilled Nursing Facility Week from May 8 to 14.

This an annual celebration recognizes the nation’s16,000 certified skilled nursing facilities, their residents and staffs. Golden LivingCenter-Dorchester is a 120-bed facility offering skilled nursing care as well as rehabilitation and Alzheimer’s/dementia care.

• Local homebuilders are opening 11 homes for the public to view during the Showcase of Homes May 6 – 7 and May 13 – 15.

The ninth annual event, sponsored by the Door County Home Builders Association (DCHBA), will present 10 newly constructed homes and one remodeled home in Door County. Local Door County home and remodeling companies will also display cabinetry, flooring, finishes, and more.

The builders represented this year include Bay Lakes Builders, Countrywide Construction, A.J. Deuchert Construction, PortSide Builders, Inc., Tielens Construction, Van’s Lumber & Custom Builders and WE Builders, Inc.

The homes are located in a variety of areas around Sturgeon Bay and Egg Harbor. The showcase cost of $10 will include admission to all homes. Tickets are on sale at area businesses including Lamperts, Door County banks, the Door County Visitors Bureau, and homes on showcase days. Hours of the event are 4 – 7 pm on Fridays and 11 am – 4 pm on Saturdays and Sunday, May 15.

• The Door County Board of REALTORS® Education Committee held a “Shop Talk” on “Auctions & Short Sales” on Wednesday, April 6 at Glas Coffeehouse in Sturgeon Bay. Kurt Penn of Southport Sotheby’s Realty was the presenter.

Members of the Door County Board of REALTORS® are committed to education and “Shop Talk” is an opportunity for REALTORS® to meet informally once a month to discuss industry news.

“Shop Talk” is held on the first Wednesday of every month and is open to all Door and Kewaunee County REALTORS®. The next “Shop Talk” will be held on May 4, 2011 and focus on shore land zoning.
