What about Frontier and DSL?

In December of 2010 Frontier Communications announced it was embarking on an ambitious effort to provide DSL (Digital Subscriber Line) Internet service to northern Door County.

Frontier had just completed the purchase of Verizon’s landline territory in 14 states, including its territory in Door County, and aimed to roll out service by June. That proved to be an ambitious goal. General Manager Frank Maydak said the service should be coming online by early October, but upgrading the data backhaul line to Green Bay required more upgrades than originally thought.

“We’ve got about 80 percent of our testing complete,” Maydak said. “We could be online now, but we don’t want to be testing as we go. We don’t turn anything on until it’s 100 percent there.”

Phase one of Frontier’s rollout will provide service to about 60 percent of Door County north of Egg Harbor and Jacksonport, Maydak said. The areas served will be those near the company’s exchanges in Jacksonport, Egg Harbor, Baileys Harbor, Sister Bay, and Washington Island. Ephraim, Gills Rock and parts of Fish Creek will get DSL service in 2012.
