What Happened

The Beachfront Inn of Baileys Harbor demolished its pool building, which dates to the 1950s, to make room for a new, more attractive, and more energy-efficient pool and structure.

“We want to improve the overall look and feel of the property,” said Property Manager Mike Meulemans. “In the process, we expect to re-use or recycle as much as 80 percent of the old structure. We’re trying hard to not throw everything in the landfill.”

Peil Construction is working on the upgrades with several other local contractors, Meulemans said. The new pool will be fiberglass instead of concrete. The parking lot will also be redone, with a new design that will limit storm water runoff from the lakeside property. The historic 1950s-era sign will remain.

• The Village of Egg Harbor appointed Paula Cashin to the village board seat vacated by the resignation of Mike Fitzgerald. Cashin will fill the remainder of Fitzgerald’s term, which runs through April of 2012.

• The Town of Baileys Harbor will move its recycling drop-off location back to the Rec Park beginning with its May 14 collection.

• The Village of Egg Harbor launched a new website to promote its reconstructed marina and public beach at http://www.eggharbormarina.com. The site features panoramic photos of the new marina and beach, weather and fuel price information, and slip reservation information. The website was designed by Boettcher Communications of Sturgeon Bay.

• The school districts of Gibraltar and Washington Island agreed to co-op some athletic teams and district responsibilities. Team agreements for baseball, golf, softball and track for the 2011-12 and 2012-13 school years were reached to allow Washington Island students the opportunity to participate in WIAA sports. Washington Island students will be responsible for transportation.

Washington Island will contract with Gibraltar for business services and technology administration for $14,140. The agreement is not intended as a step toward a merger of the districts.
